LETTER TO THE EDITOR
I’ve known William Schumer for over a decade. When we met, we were colleagues at U.S. Bank and our children were preschool classmates at Excelsior Elementary. Professionally, William had a reputation as a dynamic leader with strong interpersonal skills – the kind of executive who made people feel valued and heard, leading with curiosity and fostering a collaborative approach. As our families became friends, I came to know William’s integrity, character and dedication to his family and community. In addition to his impressive career, he’s an involved parent and a tireless volunteer. William invests his free time and his talent for the benefit of others – and the Minnetonka School District could benefit tremendously from his service and his skills.

His professional background, business acumen and expertise would bring a valuable perspective to the School Board. As an executive at large companies in highly regulated industries (banking and health care), William knows how to get things done in the face of complexity: managing large budgets, navigating regulatory frameworks, balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders, making difficult decisions. The challenges facing our district are similar to those debated in the board rooms of large companies: How can we pursue excellence and invest in innovation while being fiscally responsible, thoughtful stewards of the resources entrusted to us?

William is uniquely positioned to understand the needs of diverse students and families in the district. His husband is an immigrant who recently completed the long path to U.S. citizenship, and their children have multi-racial heritage. With his personal experience of raising two children in Minnetonka schools, William will bring empathy for parents and students.

William Schumer leads with intellectual humility and compassion. He asks thoughtful questions, listens deeply and seeks to learn from others’ experiences and understand their perspectives. I know his wisdom, insight and humanity will be valuable assets to the Minnetonka School District, the board and all of their stakeholders.
